When high school senior Sarah Raines is forced to go on a science field trip as part of detention, she never dreams it will turn her life upside down.

The group of five students and their teacher stumble across a crime scene in the woods and are taken hostage by the criminals. Locked in a dark storage room with the football star, the cheer queen, the book nerd, and the school slacker, Sarah thinks she has everyone figured out. That is, until the secrets start to come out. It seems no one is who she thought they were—most of all Connor the slacker.

When Sarah finds a way to escape, the teens flee into the treacherous Montana wilderness. Tracked by the kidnappers at every turn, the group is forced to split up. Sarah and Connor go in search of help, but are soon faced with an impossible decision. Do they die—or become killers themselves?

A new Young Adult book…FINALLY!!!

Posted Posted in My Writing World

It’s been FOUR years since I’ve released a young adult suspense novel. Since then, I’ve had six cozy romances come out. Well, it’s time to change that! On April 25, 2019, RUNNING FROM THE DARK will become available on Amazon. This book was many years in the making and is very dear to my heart because of its small-town roots. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Checks on the Bucket List

Posted Posted in Miscellaneous

Most people have a bucket list, whether it’s written down on fancy paper, typed into their phone, or known only in their mind. Over the years, my bucket list has changed. Sometimes things that once seemed important are no longer relevant, and things I didn’t care about before have taken center stage.

This school year, I’m checking something off that had fallen off my bucket list for a time…but jumped back on this spring.

But first, I want to tell you about Mr. Hansen.

Rick Hansen was my orchestra teacher in my youth. I started with him in the 4th grade and continued with him all through high school. By the time I made it to college, he was teaching one of the orchestras on the local campus so I joined and had him for two more years. (If you’re counting, that’s 11 years.) During my senior year, I took private lessons from him. In May, Mr. Hansen retired after 40+ years of teaching. Former students were invited to attend the final concert, and I wasn’t going to miss it for anything! So, I packed up my kids (and my sister who also played with him) and drove to Idaho. I’ve played (and still play) with multiple orchestras since I left Idaho, and they’ve been fun, but man…it sure felt good to get back on stage with the Madison High School Orchestra.

We rehearsed the songs a couple of times just hours prior to going on stage, and let me say, for a bunch of “old folk” we sounded pretty good. Many of us have put on a few (or a lot) of pounds, we have a few (or a lot) more gray hairs, and our jobs take more hours than flipping burgers a few nights a week, but we’ve apparently “still got it”.

It was tradition for our high school orchestra to perform at Disneyland every other year. Since Disney was a big part of our high school days, I’m glad one of the songs we played at the final concert included Disney music.  You can see me somewhere over yonder in the 1st violin section.

Now, back to the bucket list theme. Growing up, I thought it would be fun to be an orchestra teacher. It was one of those items on my bucket list that had one foot on and one foot off for many years. I liked the idea of being with an orchestra all the time, but questioned my directing skills.

Flash Forward to 2017. At this point I’ve played in an orchestra with world-renowned artists performing with us at every concert. I’ve played at weddings. I’ve taught students in my home. I’ve played at church. I even played in a quartet for an episode of a TV show this past spring! But, after attending Mr. Hansen’s final concert I realized how much I missed orchestra in a school setting.

So, after learning of an opening for a string instructor in our school district, I decided to apply. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom and writer for years, yet the timing felt right. And, I was hired to teach beginning orchestra at a local school. Whoa…

My class has only been going for a week and a half, but I’m already loving it. This morning my students played a pizzicato piece with perfect rhythm for the first time. They were excited, I was excited, and it showed on everyone’s faces. I can’t wait for the next class!

And so, Mr. Hansen, thank you. Thank you for 40+ years of creating memories, instilling a love of music into your students, and for many, many laughs. My life is still being impacted because of my love for orchestra all those years ago.

[Heads off to check one more thing off the bucket list.]

(Here’s a clip of the 2016-2017 Madison High School Orchestra at the final concert. When I was in high school, we went twice to “Phantom of the Opera” in San Francisco with the orchestra and played the music multiple times. I’m glad he chose this for his final concert with them.)

OUTSMARTING THE KIDS

Posted Posted in Miscellaneous

Growing up, the only thing I remember about St. Patrick’s Day is wearing green so I didn’t get pinched on the playground. Today the holiday is more widely celebrated. And, like most holidays, has become highly commercialized. That’s fine, though. I like a good excuse to party.

When my kids were young, I read about something called leprechaun traps in a magazine. Up to that point I’d never seen or heard of one. For those who haven’t experienced it, a leprechaun trap is designed to trick a leprechaun so you can steal his gold.

We’ve mad a few traps over the years and reused favorites on other years. My kids have never actually caught a leprechaun with their trap, but the trail of gold coins (aka chocolate coins from the bulk section of our grocery store) prove that they’ve been close.

My favorite St. Patrick’s Day by far was the time the kids tried to capture a leprechaun on camera. When it came time for them to go to bed, I heard whispering in the living room where the trap had been set up. Curious, I listened in without them noticing…and I’m glad I did! The sneaky children had set up a video camera in the corner of the room and aimed it at the leprechaun trap set up on the coffee table. Not wanting to spoil the fun for them when they discovered the next morning that their parents were indeed the ones littering the floor with chocolate, my husband and I spent the next way-too-may minutes deleting their video and making a new one. Our video never caught the leprechaun in action, but you can hear a maniacal giggle in the background right before the camera gets tipped over. Then, you hear more giggling as the camera is uprighted, showing that gold coins surround the trap. The kids watched the video over and over and over and…

Okay, maybe we went too far.

They’re all so LITTLE!

The only other thing we do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is make Dublin Coddle and Irish soda bread. Have I ever eaten this stuff in Ireland? No. I’m not Irish, and my husband’s family is only part Irish, but we can still enjoy cuisine from around the world thanks to Google.

If you’d like some clean reading for your St. Patrick’s Day holiday, check out my book A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK. Right now it’s only $1.99 on Amazon!

Legend…or reality?

Posted Posted in My Writing World
As you might have noticed from my Soul Saver Series, I’m a sucker for anything historical. When Author Holly Kelly told me about a project she was working on about the Fountain of Youth, I couldn’t wait for it to be finished so I could read it.

Early explorers are fascinating. I’m not sure if I would have had the guts to travel across an ocean looking for land that may or may not be there, but I’m glad someone else had the courage. Legend says that Florida was discovered by Juan Ponce de Leon in the 16th century while he was searching for the Fountain of Youth. Is that true? Probably not. If I remember correctly, no proof has been found that he was on that particular quest, but…it makes for a great story.
The older I get, the more I think I’d like to find the Fountain of Youth for myself. But, since that’s probably not a possibility for most of us, you should settle for reading Holly’s new book, Cursed by the Fountain of Youth. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and I think you will to.  Here’s some more info:

What if the Fountain of Youth were a woman and that woman’s blood held the key to eternal youth? For Fae Miller, that is her reality and it will likely kill her.For centuries, countless adventurers have searched for the Fountain of Youth. Those who found it thought they would gain eternal life. Instead, they find themselves murdered by its guardians. There was, however, one, lone survivor—Fae Miller. As an infant, she not only survived the Fountain, she took its power.

Twenty-two years later, Fae is hiding in plain sight at a local college. She’s is determined to leave the past behind her and live a normal life. But for one dying man, the search for the Fountain of Youth continues, and he is leaving a trail of blood and mutilated bodies in his wake. Unfortunately, that trail leads directly to Fae. Her only hope is a young, new college professor, also known as Special Agent Nick Chase of the FBI. Nick is determined to do two things: keep Fae alive, and keep his relationship with his student professional. Both of these jobs prove difficult—especially when love and magic get involved.

 Excerpt:

Bathed in moonlight stood the most beautiful scene Fae had ever laid eyes on. A fountain sat on top of a hill. Stone steps at her feet led up to the structure. Water flowed over the side of it, as if someone had been filling it and left the water running too long. The water continued its flow down the steps and seeped into the mossy ground at her feet.
Sloshing through the water, Fae made her way up the steps. Even though the air around her felt cold, the water warmed her feet. When she got to the top, she gasped at the breadth of the fountain. It was the size of a swimming pool, brimming with water that spilled over the side.
The singing stopped, and then a voice spoke, filling her with inexplicable joy. Fontaine. You’ve returned to me.
She’d heard this voice before, but couldn’t quite place where.
Come join me in the water.
“I’ll drown,” she said.
There was a warm chuckle. You won’t drown, my child. You are born of my waters.
“Who are you?” Fae asked, uncertain whether she should be terrified or not.
I am the Lady of the Fountain.
“Is that kind of like the Lady of the Lake? The one in King Arthur’s legend?”
You speak of Freya, my sister. My name is Ester.
Fae looked around at the forest of the Between and wondered if this was the place she was born, and not the bayou in Florida. Could her mother be buried around here?
This is not my original home, Ester said, as if she could read Fae’s thoughts. I have been moved twice in my lifetime. My first home is in a place you call Ethiopia. I lived happily there for many centuries. But then I was stolen from my home and brought to the Americas. For many years, I was kept safe by my guardians, but then one betrayed me and wished to exploit my powers. I did not allow him to use me to further his evil designs. But then I was left alone—until a man named Conall found me and brought me here.
“Why didn’t he return you to your home in Africa?”
He told me my home has been corrupted. I would not be safe there.
“I’m really sorry.”
Don’t worry over me, child. This place is wholly adequate.
“That’s good to hear.” Fae paused, the question she’d been dying to ask on the tip of her tongue. Finally, she asked, “Do you remember my mother and father? Do you know where I can find them?”
I’m sorry. Where they are, you cannot go. I am truly sorry.
“So they truly are dead?”
“Yes.”
Fae’s heart sank. She hoped that Brigitte had been lying and her parents were alive somewhere. Fae could feel the remorse emanating from the fountain and felt the need to comfort Ester.
“But, you saved me.”
Yes, I did.”
“Thank you,” Fae said.
You are welcome, my child.
Fae reached out her hand and touched the water. Her spirits immediately lightened. The water took on a green glow as a breathtaking face appeared just below the surface, haloed in long, black hair. The Lady smiled at her but remained beneath the water.
“So, you can grant youthfulness?” Fae asked.
Or take it, from anyone that touches my waters.
 “What happens when they drink?”
They are not meant to drink. That is a theft. Youth stolen without permission. For most, the punishment is immediate—madness.
An errant leaf drifted and landed on the surface of the water. Fae expected it would float, but it didn’t. It dropped like a stone. This water wasn’t like any other she’d seen. Fae wondered what those waters had done to her.
The waters did nothing to you. I gave you my power. I saw what was planned from the beginning. I could not stop him from destroying my guardians, but I could keep him from succeeding in his quest for eternal life. So, I gave you my power—leaving me weak and powerless. That act accomplished two things—it kept the power from falling into evil hands, and it saved your life.
“Are you still powerless?”
No, my dear.  I am now fully restored.
“That’s good to know, but I’m sorry to tell you that he found me. He came after me. He got his youth back.”
That is unfortunate. I only meant to protect. Instead, I cursed you.
“I wouldn’t call eternal youth a curse.”

It can be. There is no fear as universal as the fear of death. Men will kill to stop it. They will do the most heinous and terrible things to avoid it. And giving you the power to grant eternal life will make you forever a target. Now, will you please join me in my waters?

The History behind the Mystery:

St. Augustine, Florida is rich in history, murder, intrigue, and ghost stories—making it the perfect setting for this book. You might be interested to know that some of the most outrageous tales in this novel are actually based on true history—including the tale of Captain Abela and Dolores. The tragic end to their love story occurred over two hundred years ago in a secret room located in St. Augustine’s Castillo de San Marcos—a castle-like fort built by the Spanish over three hundred years ago. Tourists are able to sign up for the St. Augustine Ghost Tour to learn more about the ill-fated lovers. The image at the right is the actual room in which they died. You’ll learn more about their story by reading Cursed by the Fountain of Youth.

Another interesting note: The legend of the Fountain of Youth has long been tied with St. Augustine and there is talk of a society that exists to protect the Fountain of Youth from discovery. No one knows if the society truly exists. If it does, it is cloaked in secrecy.

Valentine’s Day: Love it or Hate it?

Posted Posted in My Writing World

Valentine’s Day, like many holidays, has become overly commercialized. This season, stores began selling merchandise on December 26th, many weeks before the actual holiday will occur. Now, I’m a holiday lover, but really? Of all the holidays, I feel like Valentine’s Day, a day we should all be showing love, has become a day to show off instead.

As a child, we passed Valentine’s cards out to all the kids in our school classes. Some of them contained candy and some didn’t. That was fine. It was all about what was written on the card. I remember spending hours carefully selecting each message for the recipient. After all, I wouldn’t want to accidentally declare my love to a boy I didn’t have a crush on. And if I did have a crush on a boy, I didn’t want to make it too obvious.

Last year, my children brought home the usual Valentines, but never even looked at the cards. It was all about the candy. Gone are the days of a conversation heart or two tucked inside a tiny Valentine envelope. Now, some overachieving students (cough…parents) are instead giving entire bags stuffed with candy and gifts to each student in the class. Where will the madness end?

I’d much prefer a thoughtful homemade card or letter or a loving gesture. I’d also rather spend time with my hubby than have him try to outdo the neighbors by buying me larger bouquets of flowers and bigger boxes of chocolates than everyone else. Am I alone in this thinking? Tell me, what do you really think of the next holiday?

NEW COVER REVEAL: “A Heart … Off limits”

Posted Posted in My Writing World

Revealing a new cover and blurb about a book is almost as exciting to me as the actual release day. For me, it’s often the first time anyone other than critique partners and editors learn anything about what I’ve been working on since I don’t usually share many excerpts during the writing process.

Well, guess what? I have another book coming out! The latest in my Holiday Novella Collection (Valentine’s Day edition) will release on February 1, 2017. Here’s the cover and blurb:

Rose Quinn has finally met the perfect guy, but there’s a
problem. He’s already taken.

As the owner of a small floral shop, Rose meets new guys
every day—guys shopping for romantic gifts for girlfriends and wives. Chris
Packer is no exception. Twice a week he comes to Rose’s Garden to buy one
unique flower for his girlfriend, never duplicating. The more Rose gets to know
Chris, the more she finds herself falling for his charms. Not wanting to be
‘the other woman,’ Rose tries to push Chris from her mind and searches for love
elsewhere, even giving in to a blind date arranged by an employee.

Will Rose find love somewhere else, or will she win the
heart that’s currently off limits?

If you’d like to pre-order a copy of A Heart … Off Limits, you can do that here:

I hope you enjoy this newest novella!
